Can you buy happiness?

Most of us like nice stuff.

Most of us know that all the money and luxuries in the world will not buy you true happiness.

I was reminded of this after I heard that someone I know, who was “that girl” with the “dream life”, was getting a divorce.

We are just the observers looking through the front window where everything looks perfect, the smiles and laughs seem authentic and the intimacy between two people appear so real.

And yet, it was all an illusion.

Sure, money, power, premium priced gifts might lift you up for a short period but it will never provide you the type of happiness that creates a life of the fulfillment and true gratitude.

BUT a life of poverty—a life of always trying to make ends meet – isn’t joyous either.

You see, there’s nothing inherently wrong with money, just as there’s nothing innately wrong with material possessions or working a 9-to-5.

BUT If you live in a mindset of wanting more things and think you’ll be happier once you have the new house or new car, that is just a lie.

It’s just that when we put money and possessions first, we lose sight of our real priorities.

We lose sight of life’s purpose.

I love material things and living a lavish lifestyle just like the next woman, but I am fully aware that while these are just things that I desire, feel gratitude and enjoy, it’s not the same as being in the state of real happiness without material things.

So while we all know, at least intellectually, that money won’t buy happiness, let’s not forget about the important things in life: health, relationships, growth, contribution, community.

Money helps accentuate these areas for sure, but the size of your wallet is much less important once your priorities are in line with your beliefs.

I’m so sad for my friend who is going through her divorce. These are the “wake-up and shake-it-up” moments that the Universe delivers to all of us.  Let’s find the lesson and start living life instead of trying to find happiness.  You have got to create it yourself.
